Nathaniel "Junie" Thompson, Jr. Obituary

Nathaniel James Thompson, Jr., was born July 2, 1947 and departed his life on December 20, 2024. Nathaniel was born to the late Lena M. Garrison and Nathaniel James Thompson, Sr.

Nathaniel attended Richmond Public Schools System, afterward he went to the United States Army. Upon his return home, he was employed at MCV Hospital. Later he moved to Baltimore Maryland to work for Prince George County as a Corrections Officer. Nathaniel returned to Richmond to work for Henrico County (Recreation & Parks).

After several years of service with Henrico County (Recreation and Parks) Nathaniel had to retire due to failing health. Even as his health declined, he was determined not to allow his illness to take away his independence.

At an early age Nathaniel attended Moore Street Baptist Church. After his return to Richmond and on any given Sunday you could look up and see Nathaniel attending Bethlehem Baptist Church service to see his grandchildren sing and speak.

Nathaniel (Junnie) was a loving and devoted son, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. A fascinating man with many talents and a zest for life, he liked to dress, loved listening to old school music, detailing his cars, playing cards and chess, but he was most happy spending time with his family.

He will truly be missed by his family and friends.

Nathaniel leaves to cherish his memory his loving children:  two daughters, Lisa Thompson and LaKeisha Matthews; three sons, Corey Matthews, Michael Lewis, and DeAndre Gay; a devoted loved one, Cynthia Matthews; Eight grandchildren, Myneisha Lewis, Arkeen Lewis, Brianna Goode, Corey Matthew Baker, Cordaja Baker, Tyelle Matthews, Chance Matthews and Josiah Matthews; one great-granddaughter, Nylah Goode; Six sisters, Mary Griffis, Nathalie Webb, Gloria Peatross, Charlene Carney, Myrashell Thompson and Samantha Thompson; and  two brothers, Marvin Thompson and Emanuel Thompson.
