Marvin Smith, Sr. Obituary

Marvin Smith, Sr., age 58, of Richmond, VA departed this life Monday, January 12, 2026.

The Man:

Marvin Smith, Sr. was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose life was rooted in faith, commitment, and love for family. Born on July 22, 1967, in Richmond, Virginia, he built a life defined by responsibility, hard work, and unwavering presence. Marvin was preceded in death by his mother, Emily Smith; father, James Roland; and sister, Shelia Hubbard. In 1986, he graduated from John Marshall High School and was a well-known basketball player at both John Marshall High School and Armstrong High School. He continued his academic and athletic journey at DeVry University. Marvin was baptized at a young age in the Church of God in Christ, where his foundation of faith was established early in life. His relationship with God remained a guiding force throughout his years. Marvin faithfully studied God’s Word and believed in living out his faith through example rather than title. He often shared daily devotionals, scriptures, and words of encouragement with his children and loved ones, ensuring that faith was not only spoken but practiced within his family. Though he did not hold permanent membership in one congregation, Marvin remained actively involved in several churches, maintaining a deep respect for the church and a consistent commitment to spiritual growth. He was a man who believed in showing up—whether for his family, his work, or his community. Those who knew him best knew him as steady, thoughtful, and intentional, carrying himself with strength and deep conviction.

The Myth:

Marvin was well known by many, with countless people first meeting him while sitting in a chair at his barbershop. Marvin was also the chef of the family. He expressed love through service, pouring his heart and soul into every meal he prepared. Cooking was one of the ways he showed love, care and connection. Marvin was always ready for conversation, engaging others fully and commanding attention in a way that made people feel seen and valued. However, what many didn’t know is that beyond the barbershop, he was involved in real estate and was deeply committed to his community. Marvin’s love for his family, in particular his children and grandchildren, was undeniable, and he showed up for them in every way he could. To know him was to know consistency. Stories of his wisdom, humor, and discipline are woven throughout the memories of those he touched. He coached little league basketball and mentored youth and young men, always seeing the best in everyone and encouraging them to live up to it. Marvin was known for his words of guidance, his propensity to stay when others would leave, and his calm assurance in moments that required courage. People often recall how he listened patiently, offered advice without judgment, and stood firm when life demanded resilience. Over time, these stories became part of who he was a man whose presence alone brought reassurance.

The Legend:

Marvin’s legacy lives on in those he leaves behind. He is survived by his children, Ciarra (Ronald, Jr.), Ashley, Marvin, Jr. (M.J.), Tyler, and KayaAyn; eight grandchildren, Calvin, Jr., Josyah, Zyon, Timothy, Jr., Je’Ron, Graceson, Joseph, and Sahana (his “beautiful”); two sisters, Pamela and Amanda; three brothers, Henry, Pernelle, and James (Trina); five cousins who were raised as siblings, Courtney, Jeanette, Bernadette, Wanda (Anthony), and Owen; two aunts, Mary and Barbara, who raised him as their own; the love of his life, Lisa, who remained a devoted friend; and a host of other beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who are each carrying forward the values he instilled and the love he modeled. What he built cannot be undone. His faith, lessons, and example continue to shape lives, guide decisions, and strengthen generations that are yet to come. Although Marvin can no longer be seen, the impact of his life remains undeniable. His story does not end here, it continues through every life he touched.
