Larry G. Burgess, Jr. Obituary

Larry Graye Burgess, Jr. was born on February 11, 1979, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was the beloved eldest son of the late Larry Graye Burgess, Sr. and the late Brenda Mills Burgess.

Larry was a man of faith, initially being a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and later becoming a dedicated member of The United House of Prayer for All People, where he was a member of the church band, youth choir director, elder, and assistant pastor. His spiritual journey mirrored his commitment to family and friends. He attended Harrisburg City Schools and was a member of the Harrisburg High School Marching Band where he showcased his immense talent playing the tuba and trumpet. In the local community, he was a member of the Boy Scouts where he enjoyed hiking, camping, and learning things about life and survival. After high school, Larry relocated to Richmond, Virginia and served as an ambassador for the City of Richmond and as a Behavior Specialist for the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System.

Beyond his professional life, Larry found much joy in the simple things in life. As an adoring fan of the NBA’s Miami Heat and NFL’s Detroit Lions, he enjoyed watching his favorite teams play any time of the week.  As a proud father, he enjoyed cheering on his children in their various sports endeavors and any engagement where he could bring support. His sporadic sense of humor had the ability to make an individual who was upset, laugh to the point where they’d forget what they were upset about. Although very few are gifted at making others laugh till it hurts, for Larry, it was natural.

On May 5, 2025, Larry Graye Burgess, Jr. transitioned into eternal life.  Larry is preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents: Lalla Harris Mills and Kaiser Mills of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Adella Burgess and James E. Burgess of Littleton, North Carolina; Four uncles, Ralph Mitchell, James E. Burgess II, Carlton Burgess and Bill Burgess; and one aunt, Christine Burgess. Larry leaves behind a legacy of love, commitment, and determination. He leaves to celebrate his life and legacy, three children: sons Ke’Mari and Larry III, and daughter London of Virginia; two siblings: Kailan D. Burgess of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Christopher Figg of Wilmington, North Carolina; four aunts: Belinda Mills Francis of Atlanta, Georgia, Eva D. Mills of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Otelia Royster of Knightdale, North Carolina, and Hazel Burgess of San Diego, California; two uncles: Elmond Ray Burgess of Randleman, North Carolina and Jerome Mills of Temecula, California; and a host of relatives and friends.
