Karl E. Smith, Sr. Obituary

Karl Smith was born on January 10, 1938, to Willie and Carrie Smith at their family home in Charles City, Virginia. Karl enjoyed his early life growing up with his siblings, especially his sister Jacquelyn, nephew Tommy, and niece Pearl. Being the family historian, his favorite pastime was retelling stories and sharing family history. Many of these stories involved the mischief activities of these four. If you were around him for more than a few minutes, you have heard some of these stories. He cherished the time they spent together, and these memories comforted him during his final years. He was an integral part of supplying vital information for our family tree. He was adamant about sharing this family history and passing it on to the next generation.

Karl attended Ruthville High School, and during his youth he joined Parish Hill Baptist Church and was baptized there on October 3, 1948.  This event laid the foundation for his spiritual journey.

He began his Naval Career at the United States Naval Training Center in Bainbridge, Maryland on June 12, 1956. He completed training on August 15, 1956. He proudly served in Company 229 as part of the 4th Regiment 41st Battalion. According to his written statement next to his picture in the Navy yearbook, he was “The Brains of 227’, holding the position of FN.

After leaving the Navy, Karl returned to New York to live. There, he met Virginia Barnes and during their relationship welcomed three children. He later married Dorothy Silver and they created a life together in South Jamaica and later Cambria Heights, where he lived until his health began to fail and he moved with his daughter, Michele in Virginia.

Starting civilian life, Karl began his career as a New York City bus operator with Triboro Coach. He loved his express run to Wall Street in the early mornings. He made lifelong friends of many of his co-workers and worked there until his retirement in 1991.

As a lover of cars, Karl always had the latest car with all the bells and whistles. This love led to his diecast car collection. This was his pride and joy. He could sit and talk for hours to anyone who listened about the details of each model. He built his collection to over sixty cars.

He leaves to mourn two sisters, Dr. Corrine Battle and Jacquelyn Smith Watkins, both of Charles City, Virginia; one sister-in-law, Mabel Smith, of Charles City, Virginia two sons, George Smith of Queens, NY, and Sterling Silver of Bon Aire, GA, four daughters, Portia Johnson of Wake Forest, NC, Michele Ferguson of North Chesterfield, VA, Patrice Johnson of Cambria Heights, NY and Carlie Faison of Rosedale, NY; thirteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives, friends and neighbors.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one son Karl Smith II, one stepson Victor Silver, three sisters, Lucille Mungin, Pearl Smith, and Nancy Christian, five brothers, Alexander Smith, Herman Smith, Robert Smith, Ernest Smith, and William Smith.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Parrish Hill Baptist Church, 12401 John Tyler Memorial Hwy., Charles City, VA, with a viewing held one hour prior to the service.

Interment will follow in Parrish Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
