The Lord called Gay home to be with Him on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 from Chippenham Hospital. Up until the end, Gay maintained her kindness, compassion, appreciation of music and beauty, and love of family and friends. She never passed up an opportunity to "cut a rug" on the dance floor.
Gay was born on December 13, 1960 in Richmond, VA to Irene E. Moore and Oscar K. Smith. She was the youngest of six kids. Living in Richmond her entire life, Gay attended Thomas Jefferson High School, graduating in 1978. While maintaining employment her entire adult life, Gay is mostly known for being a Lead Teacher at Tuckaway Child Development Center in Carytown for nearly 30 years.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her son, Eric (life partner Krystle); brothers, Welford, Jr. (Margo), Godfrey (Dolly); sister, Laureen; aunt, Virginia; cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends, including her best friend of over 57 years, Virginia (Candi) Crawford.
Our hearts are deeply saddened by the unexpected loss of such a kind and wonderful soul. However, we rejoice in our spirits because she is no longer in pain and in a better place. She will be missed but her memory will forever leave a smile.
Keep dancing Gay!!!
