Gary Johnson

On Friday, August 15, 2025, Gary Johnson, lovingly known to many as Doc, departed this earthly life.

He was born March 7,1957, in Richmond, Virginia to the late John Davis, Sr. and Merdell Pearson Johnson.

Gary attended the Richmond Public School system. He was a graduate of the Virginia Randolph High School. Gary worked as a bus driver for the Richmond Public School System prior to discovering his love and passion for photography and freelance work. His ability to capture still images brought him immense joy and tranquility, which persisted as long as his health allowed.

Gary married his loving wife Jennie Fryson on July 26, 2013. To this union one child was born, Ryan Johnson. Gary was added to the Dill Avenue Church of Christ in 1988 and later worshipped at the West Broad Street Church of Christ thereafter. 

He took pleasure in fishing on the water with his brothers. He also cherished the happy moments spent with his sisters and adored every aspect of family times.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, John Davis, Sr. and Merdell Pearson. Johnson; two of his sons, Gary Lee Johnson and Dwayne Orasho Henley; and his sister, Etla Virginia Brown.

He is survived by those who will cherish his memory: his wife, Jennie F. Johnson; one daughter, Kelly Johnson; two sons, Gary "Sir Doc" Ampy (La’Chrisha) and Ryan Johnson; twelve grandchildren; three sisters, Jacqueline Rosetta, Marilyn, and Darcy Jean Johnson; three brothers, John Davis, Jr., James Roger, and Leon Alfonso Johnson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

A viewing will be held from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at Wilson & Associates' Funeral Service - East Chapel, 5004 Nine Mile Rd., Richmond, VA , with the family present to receive friends from 4 - 6 p.m.  The family will hold a Memorial Service on Saturday, August 30, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at West Broad Church of Christ, 813 W. Broad Street, Richmond, VA.
