Donald H. Jones Obituary

Donald Harvey Jones was called home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at his residence in Richmond, VA. Born on September 23, 1941, in Charles City, VA, he was the beloved son of Christopher and Carrie Jones (Lemon).

At an early age, Donald dedicated his life to Christ and was baptized, continuing to serve faithfully at Liberty Baptist Church throughout his life. He graduated from Ruthville High School in 1959, where he excelled in both baseball and basketball, earning the title of "Best Athlete" in his class. In the early 1960s, Donald's athletic prowess led him to play as a pitcher for the semi-professional Negro League baseball team, the Jersey City Redlegs. Later, he returned to Virginia at the behest of a local team owner to play for a hometown team.

Upon his return to Virginia, Donald embarked on a diverse career, working for Union Camp, Anheuser-Busch, and Philip Morris. His passion for landscaping emerged when he began working for Mr. Morton G. Thalhimer, Jr. Donald's touch transformed any lawn he cared for, and his home was reputed to have the most beautiful lawn in Richmond. Alongside his green thumb, he harbored a deep love for music, recording and releasing several gospel CDs with his son Tony under the name “The Father & Son.” His favorite group, The Sensational Nightingales, often performed at Liberty Baptist Church, thanks to his efforts.

Later in life, Donald married his loving and devoted wife, Lunnette Avent Jones, on April 18, 1992. Their union was a testament to God's timing as Donald had admired Lunnette from afar for over 20 years, heeding the respectful caution of her late brother and his dear friend, Charles Avent.

God's will was communicated to Lunnette through her son, Clarence A. Richardson, Jr., and the late Nancy Thalhimer, as well as Uncle Dude and Aunt Henrietta Lemon. They heeded the call and their decision brought immense joy.

Donald was known to all as a sharp dresser, a generous soul, and a kind man always ready to lend a helping hand. He earned the affectionate nickname “Papa” upon the birth of his grandson, Austin, in July 1992, a role he cherished deeply. The children in Lunnette’s daycare also affectionately called him “Papa,” a testament to his nurturing spirit.

Donald Harvey Jones leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and generosity. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Donald was a character whose personality and wit could light up a room. With his comedic flair and impressive talent for impressions, he had everyone in stitches, especially when mimicking family and friends. One of his favorite pastimes was playing cards, particularly Bid Whist. Known for his competitive spirit, Donald played to win and often did, much to the dismay of his opponents. If his team lost, his teammate would surely feel his disappointment.

Donald was preceded in death by his father, mother, and siblings: Shirley Jones, Janet Moore, and Herbert Jones. Cherishing his memory are his loving wife, Lunnette A. Jones, and his children: sons Anthony "Tony" Lamont Jones (Andrea) and Clarence A. Richardson, and daughters Lisa Jones-Blocker (Terence), Ohaion Allen, and Talliscia Irby (Roy). He also leaves behind a legacy of grandchildren: Jovan Allen, Austin Crosby, Joszef Allen, Tequila Crump, and Delana Irby.

Additionally, Donald’s memory is fondly remembered by his nephews Ronald Moore and devoted nephew Ronald Bassett, and his nieces Toya McClary and Cherrie Rennick. His family also includes four great-grandchildren and a host of caring family and friends. Special mention goes to his lifelong best friend of 35 years, Morton G. Thalhimer, Jr., as well as dear friends Linwood Jordan, William Page, and Willie Harris.
