Coretta H. Jackson Giles Obituary

In loving memory of Coretta Jackson Giles, age 89, who gracefully transitioned on April 8, 2024 from this life to eternity, leaving behind a profound legacy that illuminated the path of love, compassion, and resilience. Born on April 24, 1934, in Richmond, Virginia, to James S. and Myrtle C. Jackson, Coretta's journey was marked by a steadfast commitment to uplifting her community and challenging the barriers of racism and discrimination.

Coretta leaves behind her two children, Richelle C. Washington and Richard T. Washington (Calissa); and her grandson, Cordaryl T. Washington.

As the only child of James and Myrtle Jackson, Coretta's upbringing was filled with love, determination, and the values of hard work instilled by her parents. Raised in a home on Whitcomb Street, crafted by her father's hands, Coretta learned the importance of unity alongside her family, where her mother, Myrtle Jackson, lovingly welcomed and adopted six girls, expanding their household into a bustling haven of love and support.

Despite the challenges of being the sole provider, Coretta courageously took on the responsibility of caring for the entire household. Working tirelessly to support her family, she exemplified resilience and selflessness, embodying the true spirit of love and sacrifice.

After earning both Bachelor's and Master's degrees from VCU, Coretta embarked on a pioneering career in healthcare. As the head nurse at Richmond Community Hospital and MCV Hospital during the era of segregation, she confronted the injustices of separate black and white facilities with unwavering courage. Despite the oppressive systems, Coretta worked tirelessly leaving a mark on the profession and the community she served.

Coretta's influence reached far beyond the confines of hospital walls. As a dedicated member of the Eastern Stars for more than two decades, she epitomized the values of service and sisterhood, enriching the lives of those around her. Yet, among her many contributions, founding the first Big Brother & Big Sister organization at Fourth Baptist Church stands out as a testament to her dedication to mentorship and community building, a legacy that continues to thrive today. Through her visionary leadership, Coretta nurtured mentorship and community bonds that endure to this day, leaving an enduring impact on countless lives.

In 1975, Coretta's journey led her to Charlotte, NC, where she not only flourished as a businesswoman but also pioneered innovative concepts like food court seating at Gourmet Gardens in Eastland Mall. Her generosity knew no bounds, with an open-door policy that welcomed all in need, earning her the title of an "Earth Angel."

Coretta's indomitable spirit, unwavering faith, and selfless service have left an indelible mark on the fabric of Black history, inspiring generations to come. While we mourn her passing, her legacy of love, leadership, and compassion will continue to guide and inspire us all.
