Carol Powell Smith, 80, of Richmond, Virginia, passed away on February 22, 2026.
Carol was born on September 8, 1945, in Halifax County, Virginia, to Henry and French Powell. She grew up on Chimborazo BLVD in Church Hill and was a member of 31st Street Baptist Church. Graduated in 1963 from Armstrong High School, attended Virginia State College then went on to build a successful career, working in both the banking and insurance industries where she was admired for her dedication and professionalism.
Carol married Thomas Smith in 1964 and raised a family in Richmond, VA. They celebrated 61 years in 2025. Carol created a home filled with love and laughter. She delighted in her children and grandchildren making them the center of her world. Each and every greeting was genuine elation that always made you feel loved and cherished. She always had a hot meal, a cool glass of southern tea, and a warm heart for all who entered her home.
Carol enjoyed traveling within the Continental US from Maine to California, Key West to Alaska with adventures outside the four corners of America to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. She often reflected on many travels, but her eyes shined when reminiscing about her travels to Germany bike riding with the family in the small village of Garmisch.
Carol will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and unwavering love for her family and friends. With her unforgettable beautiful smile, her legacy of kindness and strength will live on in all who knew her.
Carol was preceded in death by her adored daughter Tami Shields Smith, her sisters Edwina Macklin (Willie), Ovetta Doughty (Cliff), Faustina Buck (Eugene) and parents Henry Louis Powell and French Stovall Powell.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Thomas Smith, her son Troi Smith (Sophia), and her daughter Tomi Smith Meachum. Grandchildren Aerial Smith, Othell Smith (Demetria), Asiah Smith, Ishmael Meachum, and Isa Meachum. Great grandchildren Travis Smith, Naomi Smith, Ellieana Smith. Carol also held a special place in her heart for her beloved niece Roxie Macklin (Greg); nephews Willie Macklin III (Audrey) and Daryll Macklin (Michelle); nephew Eugene Buck Jr. and niece Angela Buck; and a host of dedicated great and great-great nieces and nephews with extended family members. In-laws Florence Smith (Frank), Sherman Smith (Tammy). Dear friends Betty Hicks, Janie Holmes and all the “Golden Girls” from Armstrong High School.
A viewing will be held from 1 p.m. - 7 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2026 at Wilson & Associates' Funeral Service - East Chapel, 5004 Nine Mile Road, Richmond, VA.
A private graveside will be held.
